Shingle Marshes video

05 Feb 2025
I have just posted a video which gives a birds-eye view of the work done digging the channels and scrapes. Many thanks to Craig who made the video with his drone. Go to Shingle Marsh Video to view.

scrape works

13 Dec 2024
He finished off the scrape today, so now we leave the field alone, keep off it and wait to see what happens ... While I was there a buzzard and a male marsh harrier cruised by, followed later in the afternoon by two short-eared owls and a barn owl. Suggests there must be field voles around

first visitors

12 Dec 2024
The channels are dug and the scrape nearly finished. On a quick walk round there was a little egret in one of the new channels, a party of about ten pied wagtails around the newly dug scrape and a common snipe shot up from the reeds. All the while a barn owl was patrolling the ditch. Very promising! Jeremy

Spoonbill

16 Jul 2024
Spoonbill flying low over SS, probably making for one of the pools between here and East Lane. Maybe when we have our own lagoon ...

Barn owl

16 Jul 2024
A barn owl hunting over Shingle Marshes at 9pm. Made several stoops on prey it had detected – mostly field voles, probably. On one occasion it stayed down i the long grass for several minutes so had presumably caught and devoured something.
